A dear friend asked me to make a custom curved pieced quilt for her to match her decor. She wanted reds and greens. While the color wheel says red and green are complimentary, I had to confess to her that I couldn’t think of red and green without thinking of Christmas. So….time to expand my

Many custom quilts keeping me busy
As this year began and my husband died, I wasn’t sure I could muster my creative spirit to sew. Sewing brings me such joy and is such a special outlet for my creativity. I wasn’t feeling a lot of joy and even the beautiful fabrics (well over 500!) in my studio couldn’t lift my spirits.

Making Face Masks, Quilts on hold
As the pandemic took over our lives in central Pennsylvania, I decided to put down art quilt making and take up mask making. My initial efforts were a tucked mask with ear elastic but I quickly realized that keeping the mask on ears for the periodic community user was kind of hard…no easy way to

Curves and color in an art quilt
I often look at paintings and photographs to find inspiration for new art quilts. I’m especially drawn to other art with curves in the abstract designs. A Purple Sunset
A few months ago I was itching to play with purples, blues and pinks. I’m not sure how to explain the lure of certain colors, but there are few things that calm my soul and give me a moment away from the chaos of daily life than playing with my fabric samples. I especially like

The lure of abstract art quilts
Art quilts seem to fall into two categories…the more realistic which are often based on the use of applique techniques and abstract which are usually pieced. I admit a bias to piecing which keeps me closer to original quilting roots of our ancestors even though I run like crazy from the tradition block designs. It

Art quilt piecing in two steps
It has been nice to have some less busy times to experiment with some new techniques in piecing art quilts. I recently finished two art quilts of red rocks, from images from the southwest United States. I’ve traveled there several times with my husband. We have always been mesmerized by both the starkness of the
