Making a Sunflower Art Quilt

Posted October 30, 2015 by sharon

I have always liked sunflowers!  There is a plethora of sunflower photos, paintings, and wall quilts out there but I wanted to try my hand at my own interpretation of a sunflower quilt.  I have made some “flower” quilts which have very similar piecing for the petals, designs for which I have made my own templates

Pinterest and Inspiration

Posted October 22, 2015 by sharon

Pinterest is a wealth of art quilt inspiration!!  Currently I use Pinterest  to get broader exposure for my art quilts and to find inspiration for new art quilts.  At first I found myself only looking at art quilts or contemporary quilts, seeing what others were creating, how they combined colors and trying to figure out

Making Small Landscape Quilts

Posted October 17, 2015 by sharon

As I mentioned in my previous blog, I am focusing on creating quilts in the 2.5 square feet size or smaller for the fall, both to replenish my stock of smaller quilts and because past sales in the fall indicate small quilts are popular this time of year.  Creating landscape quilts of sunsets, sunrises, pastoral

Small Art Quilts

Posted October 12, 2015 by sharon

Now that I’m in my third full year of making and selling art quilts, I have some data to use from previous years as I plan for the fall.  It is hard to tell how many quilts are purchased for gifts but when I reviewed my sales in the fall last year I saw two trends:

Free motion quilting inspiration

Posted October 1, 2015 by sharon

Free motion quilting adds depth, texture and artistic expression to an art quilt.  For me, the focus on creating the art quilt itself is one process and the quilting of the quilt top is a different process.  I rarely have any idea about quilt stitching when I’m designing and constructing the actual art quilt.  Often

A New FLOWER Art Quilt Design

Posted September 10, 2015 by sharon

I have been experimenting with curved outside edges for my wall art quilts.  Many designs don’t lend themselves to this option because their design works fine as a squared off wall quilt.  But with some of my curved piecing I’m wondering about continuing those curves to the outside edges.  I did this with a recent

Blocky Sun Art Quilt

Posted September 1, 2015 by sharon

This week I made a fairly simple contemporary design of a sun with a wide variety of yellow, orange, rust, red and maroon fabrics.  I like to use many different fabrics even for the same color groups because I like the effect of the variety of fabrics.  This is a design in which you first

New Landscape Quilts

Posted August 29, 2015 by sharon

Now that the festival season is over (for me) I am looking towards the fall holiday season followed by the winter months when I can return to lots of creative work.  Right now I’m focused on making smaller quilts, usually under 2.5 square feet, as this size seems to have better prospects for holiday purchases.

Learning and Sharing at Arts Festivals

Posted August 19, 2015 by sharon

I always plan for great sales at arts festivals and the Sonnenberg Arts at the Garden show in Canandaigua, NY this past weekend did not disappoint.  In fact, this was my best festival yet in my limited three years of experience!  YEAH!  But beyond selling, the next best thing about being at festivals is the

  • My passion is creating contemporary wall quilts where fabrics compliment and contrast, where designs are wonky and unusual, and where the piecing lines often aren’t straight. I’m exploring the non-traditional through modern designs and contemporary landscapes. Quilts vary in size from 12” x 12” to 40” x 60”. Custom requests are welcome.
