In early November I had a week of trying new things in my quilt studio. Attempting to piece more branches onto my Tree trunks was on the list of things to try to improve my design and planning skills since this is all about planning and sequencing with a sewing project.
A landscape design such as this starts in the sky and is pieced down from that part of the quilt. But in order to insert the branches off of the trunks, you have to have a sense of how to add them BEFORE the trunk is in your quilt. This means organizing the entire quilt before you start to piece. Next time I will take photos of the early piecing in the sky for a future blog.
The two sections of two branches on the right side of the sky and three on the left side of the sky needed to be pieced first. then the reddish brown hill was added, then the orange one. At this point the tree trunk related to the two right side branches is added. Next the light green piece and a trunk without any branches which is pieced over top of the two right hand branches. You really have to figure out before you start sewing about which trees are in front or behind other trees.
I enjoy the planning and sequencing problem solving as much as the color and design decisions for the whole quilt.
