This weekend I pieced two art quilts, one a sunset and one a sunrise. The Sunrise is a larger quilt and will take more time to quilt and bind. I finished the Sunset art quilt, Sunset 85. I want to share a photo of a step I often forget…what the pieced quilt looks like from the underside or back. This photo is first in this blog. You can see that I piece everything with curved piecing. I’m assuming most of my blog followers are quilters so you will find this interesting.
I tried a different quilt stitch design with this art quilt. For the gold part directly above the hills in the foreground, I used a more compact quilt stitch design, differentiating it from the maroons, pinks and blues of the rest of the sky. It always feels like the sunset colors and intensity are richer and more compact closer to the horizon which was the effect I was trying to create.
I hope to finish the sunrise quilt by next weekend.
