This last week I experimented with a new art quilt design, these snow capped mountains. I created this quilt in the traditional piecing method but I pieced the three mountains separately and then created the sky. I pieced the mountains and sky together somewhat similar to the way I create my Tree quilts. I pieced the rest of the upper sky after the tallest mountain was added. Lastly I added the fabrics for the dark green foreground at the bottom of the quilt.
I designed the mountains with strips of fabric (one fabric for each mountain) onto which I had added a curved piece of very pale bluish white fabric. I cut slightly curved pieces of the fabric into 2-3″ wide strips and sewed them together coming to the peak point, varying the “snowy” top areas. For a first effort I’m quite happy with how it turned out.
I’m enjoying trying some new design and new techniques. Piecing for this quilt was like a puzzle as you must figure out the sequence to sew things together or it doesn’t work. I like those kinds of mental challenges in addition to the fun of combining new colors and shapes in an art quilt.
That’s beautiful! I would love to have another one of your quilts with a winter scene. I purchased a. Each scene years ago.
Thank you! I don’t often design winter scenes but if you have a photo or some ideas I’d be happy to consider them for a quilt for you. Or I could do something similar to the snow capped mountains in a different size if you want.
