My art quilt Birch Trees 22 includes some new design features. Trying new things is sometimes anxiety producing but more often fun if approached with the expectation that it may work or it may not. Nothing is lost but a few hours if it doesn’t but if new design ideas work, well, lots of options become possible.
For the last several years I’ve used fabric printed for birch trees which looks very real. The other day I saw the perfect color combinations in an abstract neutral fabric. I made this quilt with this new fabric and added birch tree bark markings through my quilt stitching. This design follows my more abstract approach to landscaping. I also added some fabric of smaller flowers, mimicking the scattered wild flowers you find in a wooded area. The leafy sky one abstract green fabric with the blue sky pieced in so not as pieced as my previous leaves and sky areas of similar quilts.
The quilt stitching was more detailed for the foreground birch trees and more typical of previous quilts for the background birch trees shown as a bit darker in color. This is clearly birch trees in summer with lots of green for the leaves.
I always have fun with the foreground where I use different quilt stitch designs which give the quilt more texture and character.
Happy quilting!!
